Boston Mayor Michelle Wu speaks at the opening ceremony for Flat 9 at Whittier.
Our landscape architects joined Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH), the Boston Housing Authority (BHA), residents, and project partners to celebrate the recent completion of The Amp, the third and final phase of the Flat 9 at Whittier affordable housing redevelopment in Roxbury.
This project successfully redeveloped a 200-unit public housing complex into a modern residential development that includes 210 deeply affordable homes and 262 additional mixed-income units. Our landscape architecture studio designed a range of open spaces, including three gated courtyards that offer both quiet garden settings and areas for gathering, as well as playgrounds designed for multiple age groups.
Tree-lined sidewalks and pedestrian pathways strengthen visual and physical connections throughout the neighborhood, enhancing accessibility and circulation while creating an inviting, community-oriented streetscape. Funding for the project included a federal HUD Choice Neighborhoods initiative, as well as support from the City of Boston.
