New Outdoor Spaces Support Community Engagement, After-School Programs

As part of a larger facility expansion and improvement project for Portland Community Squash, our team designed a series of outdoor spaces and green infrastructure elements. To expand the capacity and quality of the Community Squash recreational facility, in collaboration with architect Perkins&Will, our landscape architects re-imagined the beloved space to better serve the children and families of the center and local community.

The outdoor areas include a new patio and a multi-sport court which can be used for basketball or pickleball. The outdoor space functions as an extension of the interior program, and the flexible court and patio spaces were designed to enhance the facility’s after-school programming and social events. A redesigned entrance includes improved streetscape elements and a community front porch, a visible gesture of the center’s accessibility to the neighborhood. Green infrastructure elements include rain gardens and new plantings to assist with stormwater collection and management.
