The East Milton Square Reconstruction Project was recently awarded a Gold Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC-MA). The award recognized the project team’s attention to road safety and complete streets improvements, along with the construction and activation of a new park in a unique setting on top of an expressway bridge deck.
Our landscape architects collaborated with the Town of Milton, MassDOT, and Howard Stein Hudson to improve traffic operations and re-envision Manning Community Park, a 40,000-SF open space located on a bridge deck crossing the I-93 expressway. Now constructed, the improvements to Manning Community Park offer an attractive amenity to Milton residents and visitors, while creating a multimodal connection over the interstate.
East Milton Square serves as an important hub for business and recreation, with Manning Park serving as a connection and gateway to this popular district. The transportation and park project creates a safer, more enjoyable and inviting urban environment, improving multimodal connections and creating a visually attractive and flexible green space to serve as a resource for events and community engagement.
The redesigned park features a large lawn area enclosed by generously landscaped planting beds with ornamental and shade trees. Site furnishings and a repositioned railroad artifact exhibited at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair punctuate the design. A section of Adams Street will remain closed to serve as an event space and bikeway.
