On September 19, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Child Fountain Restoration Project at Boston Public Garden. When completed, the project will revitalize the area near the Public Garden’s Arlington Street entrance, including the two child fountains. The project is a collaboration between the Friends of the Public Garden and the design team, led by Halvorson | Tighe & Bond Studio.

Public art is an iconic aspect of the Garden, with its history of fountains and sculptures dating back to the 1860s. The two child fountains – “Boy and Bird” by Bashka Paeff and “Small Child” by Mary E. Moore, were cast in 1929 and 1934 respectively.

The fountain pools will be completely renovated, and the water circulation system will be replaced, revitalizing the fountain displays that highlight the sculptures. Updates to the landscaping and pathways in the area will also make the park more accessible and inviting.

The Child Fountain Restoration Project was conceived by the Friends of the Public Garden as one of three “transformational projects” during the organization’s 50th year. Construction of the upgrades is expected to finish in June of 2024.
