Mount Auburn Cemetery stays active with new burial options

Wicked Local Cambridge talks with Bree Harvey, VP of Cemetery and Visitor Services, about how Mount Auburn Cemetery, the first garden cemetery in American, manages to stay “open for business” through innovative new ways of memorialization.

Mount Auburn Cemetery has been developing additional burial space since the 1990s, after working with Halvorson Design on the master plan for their 175-acre.private cemetery.

Options that were explored in the master plan included group memorialization, such as the commemorative Birch Gardens designed by Halvorson Design. Here, families can choose to be memorialized on raised markers, the granite wall, or tablets aligned with the ground.

Further, as people begin to think more about their environmental impact and what goes into the earth, the cemetery began to offer green burials.
