Harvard Square Plaza Renovation

Civic Open Space | Cambridge, Massachusetts

As part of a multi-disciplinary team, Halvorson, HDR, and Touloukian Touloukian were engaged by the City of Cambridge to redesign the historic, high-traffic Harvard Square Plaza and former Out of Town News kiosk.

Considered the heart of the neighborhood, Harvard Square Plaza will be reimagined to provide accessibility, improve circulation, enhance connections to the surrounding area, and provide flexibility for programming for events.

The introduction of trees, planters and seatwalls provide a sense of enclosure and safety while offering opportunities for tourists, residents and students to gather. New flexible seating will be introduced to accommodate a variety of events, from performances and rallies to art installations and farmers/flea markets.
