Quincy Navy Park & Lone Sailor Monument
Park Design | Quincy, MA
Quincy Navy Park, dedicated in 2024, is a new waterfront open space located in Quincy’s Squantum neighborhood. Situated on the historic grounds of a former U.S. Navy shipyard, the park honors the site’s deep maritime legacy while providing a scenic space for public reflection.
Inspired by the steel hulls and ribbing of World War I-era destroyers once built on-site, the park’s design features curved walkways, stone benches, and interpretive panels that tell the story of the area’s naval contributions.
The site’s military history spans decades – from the early 1900s airshows to the Victory Destroyer Plant, Dennison Airport (where Amelia Earhart once served as director), and Naval Air Station Squantum, which operated through World War II and into the 1950s. Today, the park connects visitors to that legacy through eleven bronze plaques honoring Navy veterans from Quincy, the original ship’s bell from the third USS Quincy, and a powerful centerpiece – the Lone Sailor sculpture.
Overlooking Marina Bay and the Boston skyline, Quincy Navy Park serves as both a community gathering space and a tribute to the city’s enduring naval heritage. Through its carefully crafted design and educational elements, the park commemorates a vital chapter in Quincy’s story while inspiring future generations to remember those who served at sea.
