Public Garden Child Fountain Restoration

Historic Fountain | Boston, MA

The Child Fountain Restoration project includes a complete renovation of the historic fountain and sculptures at the iconic Arlington Street entrance of Boston’s Public Garden. Originally constructed in the 1860’s, the fountain restoration is an exciting and historically significant collaboration between The Friends of the Public Garden and the design team, led by Halvorson.

Located within the Country’s oldest botanical garden and adjacent to Boston’s prominent George Washington Statue, the Child Fountain’s two pools and sculptures had been out of service and not functioning properly for decades. Also, over time, the fountains had become lower in elevation related to surrounding landscape and paving areas.

The design raises the grade of the fountains to be more accessible and welcoming to visitors. The new fountain mechanical room is hidden below grade and includes a water conserving recirculating biofiltration system. New electrical systems include accent lighting to enhance the sculptures and accentuate the water display features. The landscape design includes additional seating to invite visitors to sit and enjoy the fountain and artwork.
