Cambridge Street Complete Streets Reconstruction

Streetscape | Cambridge, Massachusetts

Halvorson | Tighe & Bond Studio is collaborating with HDR and the City of Cambridge on the “Complete Streets” reconstruction of the River Street corridor from Central Square to Memorial Drive. In addition to improving the infrastructure, the project will create a new surface design for River Street and expand the bus terminal area at River and Magazine Streets near Central Square.

This highly inclusive community process has involved numerous working group meetings, open houses, on-site pop-ups, a walking tour, and an interactive project website (here). The design team is also leading a charrette to redesign Carl Barron Plaza—the significant open space at the heart of Central Square—and developing renovation options for Norman M. Tubman Square.

Areas under consideration include public art, fixed and/or unfixed furniture, access, plantings, and landscaping while addressing the complexity of transportation needs related to the bus bays adjacent to the plaza and pedestrian circulation.
